Dream Becomes Reality

I wanted to title this entry "Making Dreams....Out of Nothing at All", but really I hope not too many of you actually get that reference.

Anyway.....

Jess quit her job yesterday.  So this trip is now reality.  I have to say I am in awe.  Amazed.  Feeling a little anxiety.  All the good "A" emotions.  (Anticipation is another one I could mention).

I, of course, quit my job and have been lounging about for some time now.  Well, that's not exactly true, but those details are another story.

The Plan:
August - September:  Alcan!
October:  Family, Friends, Fine-tuning
November - ??:  South

Ultimate roadtrip, you say?  Yes, yes, I say.

    Hi Rebekha,

Have a blast! How is your hip doing? If you are still doing exercises for it, I am sure that that the stripper pole could be rigged to help out

I have never been to the far north but I am told that the wild flower season can be spectacular, albeit short. I vaguely recall that it is something like a few weeks in July, a little longer the farther south and lower in altitude you go.

My only experience in the south is diving in Cozumel and the seeing Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza. Cozumel has several great shallow reefs, close in to shore in the state park. You can easily snorkel there and, at least in 1985, you could rent skin gear at the beach. Mayb e this is just over romanticising my first open water dive, but that reef was better than the spots I saw on the great barrier reef. I have also heard that there is good diving and snorkeling close to shore in Costa Rica. ( Close to shore = no boat ride = cheap, maybe free).

I friends who have great stories from jungle walks in Costa Rica.

Do not miss the Mayan ruins. Chichen Itza is way, way cool. I have also heard good things about Tulum and Coba (Xoba?). Chichen Itza is inland, the other two are on the coast.

    Have fun!

How funny,  this trip was sort of born out of the Mayan ruins!  I was in Playa del Carmen for three weeks in April/May.  I visited Tulum, then Jess and I climbed the pyramid at Coba.  It was truly amazing and I can't wait to get to Chichen Itza and some of the other ruins.

I did go snorkeling in Cozumel as well, at Playa Corona, near the state park.  The snorkeling was not as spectacular as Maui, but apparently a lot of the coral was damaged in the 1995 hurricanes.  But you are right, you can still rent snorkel gear on the beach - the manager at Playa Corona was super nice and helpful.  There weren't even ten people at the beach/restaurant there and they have a few sandbags to walk on so you don't need dive booties to get out in the water.  Also only a few steps down into the water which is helpful for people with balance issues.  It's a great place to go snorkeling if you want to get away from the crowds in Cozumel and still have some service - you know, beers and nachos and hammocks.

Very much looking forward to Costa Rica.  And Belize!  I hear the reef there is phenomenal.

How about you?  Any good trips lately, or in the plans?  Don't you usually take about 4 weeks off coming up sometime soon?
