8/16/08 - Faro - Van Gorder Falls Trail
The town of Faro has an excellent visitor center providing a wealth of knowledge on local flora, fauna, and recreational opportunities. Additionally, golf clubs can be borrowed (not rented) from the visitor center for use on the nine hole golf course which winds through the town’s green spaces. The information center is immediately across the street from the Johnson RV Park, which is quite natural for an RV park and provides extremely clean showers and laundry facilities at reasonable rates. Tent camping is posted as $6.50 per night and includes showers and firewood.
A trail departing from the visitor center winds through the “wilderness” and leads to Van Gorder Falls, a small but really scenic one way trail. The Van Gorder Falls Trail connects to a ridgeline trail which traverses over the river and through the woods, connecting to the Faro Arboretum. Although slightly treacherous in the ascent and descent to the river, this trail offers amazing views and should not be missed if in Faro. The arboretum, though sparingly marked, does provide general species information and area history including the “frontier style” (single gunshot wound) demise of the earliest gold claimer in the region. Interestingly, only 15% of all vegetative species in the Yukon are introduced (a statistic similar to Death Valley) due to the extreme climatic conditions of the region.
