8/26/08 Wickersham Dome - Fairbanks

To break up the drive from Jim River to Fairbanks we planned a stop at the Wickersham Dome Trailhead located in the BLM’s White Mountains National Recreation Area. There are two trails which depart form this location, the Summit Trail and the Wickersham Creek Trail. This trail network includes two twenty mile loops which access public use cabins. The shortest available loop is a ski (cross country)  connection trail which joins the first two miles of each trailhead from the parking area. We set out from the Summit side and proceeded along a well maintained trail through boreal forest, alpine tundra, and bog habitats. The Summit trail contains boarded sections of trail to allow dry feet for the first two miles. However, the connecting section of the two trails proved too soggy for our liking and we doubled back the way we came.

The descent from the White Mountains into Fairbanks is only about forty miles so we promptly began considering evening accommodations. Five nights in the arctic necessitated indoor plumbing. To our surprise and dismay every hotel, motel and bed and breakfast we contacted had the same answer: no vacancy. The combination of tour groups and the weekday workforce saturates the available lodging. We were however referred to a fellow named Joe who operates the Blue Roof Bed and Breakfast (907 452 8987) and could provide us the perfect space for the evening with a large, clean room and private bathroom. Although Joe doesn’t seem to advertise through the typical outlets, word of mouth in Fairbanks seems to direct enough business his way to fully book his seven rooms.
