Crater Lake

10/5/08

On the way out of town, we stopped for bacon-covered maple bars at Voodoo Doughnuts – yep, you read that right – delicious!  Back on I-5, we enjoyed the morning sun and more views of Mt. Hood, Mt. Bachelor and the Three Sisters.  Near Eugene we turned east on Highway 58.  This highway leads up a scenic mountain pass with lake, mountain and river views in all directions.  Just before the pass, we stopped for lunch on this bridge in Greenwaters Park in Oakridge, OR.

After some lovely high desert scenery, we started up the road to Crater Lake National Park.  The road was frosty in places and soon we encountered snow on the side of the road.  Luckily they haven’t had much snow yet, but the roads around the rim were already closed so we were only able to visit the southern side of the caldera.

We coasted down from Crater Lake, across the farmland, enjoying the views of Mt. Shasta.  After stopping for gas in Klamath Falls and a burger at Sal’s Waterhole in Merrill, OR, we crossed the border into California.  After a short rural drive we settled in the campground at Lava Beds, did a little Spanish lesson and passed out for the night.
