La Tertulia

Constitucion y Belisario Dominguez

10 pesos

aka “The Bull Bar” – Popular local bar with the cheapest beer in town.  Unique and helpful staff, some of whom moonlight as the Forcados Mazatlecos, a Mazatlan based bull-fighting team.  When we can get seats, it is one of our favorites.

**

La Mona

Ninos Heroes y Constitucion

15 pesos

Excellent pizza is served on tree cross-sections - also good salads.  Hip venue with friendly staff.

***

Dolce Mami

Constitucion y Belisario Dominguez

n/a

Cakes, cookies and dessert treats to go. What appears to be my beer belly is really a lot of little chocolate cakes from here.

n/a

El Faro Coffee

Herbierto Frias y Mariano Escobido

n/a

Coffee is to die for - and they will grind three different kinds, plus decaf to your specifications.  Muy bueno!!

n/a

La Casita Azul

Herbierto Frias y Libertad

n/a

Small one room family restaurant – excellent local cuisine.

?

El Santo y La Panga

Ninos Heroes y Constitucion

16 pesos

This restaurant and nightclub served nouveau cuisine from a menu created by local celebrity chef, Diego.  It is currently undergoing a renovation (Jan 2009) so may very well change it’s menu or style.

***

Beli Pub

Sixto Osuna y Belisario Dominguez

15 pesos

A recently opened Irish themed bar – the going deal is the liters of draft beer.  They serve various fried foods which can be ordered at La Tertulia as well (same ownership).

***

Pura Vida

Herbierto Frias y Constitucion

n/a

Delicious smoothies, hearty breakfasts and various health foods.

**

Wing’s Army

Ninos Heroes y Constitucion

19 pesos - 2x1 Mon & Thurs

Excellent chicken wings and many different kinds of beer from all over Mexico and beyond. Of course with all that selection, Bud Light is the drink of choice.

**

28 Centro

Constitucion y Belisario Dominguez

?

Fantastic pizza and salads although we found the service a bit dysfunctional and the costs high.

****

Topolo y Habanero Wine Bar

Constitucion y Benito Juarez

?

Lovely courtyard restaurant – menu looks and smells good although we only had wine.

?

Plaza Machado

Café Pacifico

Plaza Machado

15 or 18 pesos

2x1 specials and good food provided by the steakhouse across the corner.  Trio of salsas is delicious.  Free pool table.

***

Memorial Café

Plaza Machado

Impressive selection of coffee, tea and dessert in a stylish atmosphere across from the Angela Peralta theater. Piano music on the weekends. Serves pizza, pasta, paninis and more.

****

Te Café

Plaza Machado

n/a

Good chairs, decent coffee, nice place to hang out with a laptop.

****

La Tramoya

Plaza Machado

2x1 deals

2x1 beers and good menu.  Chile rellenos are delicious.

***

Domitila

Plaza Machado

?

Fancy Mexican cuisine.  Good but pricey.

?

Oceanview - Olas Altas Beach

Puerto Viejo

Olas Altas y Sixto Osuna

15 pesos (bucket)

Oceanview restaurant/bar with decent outdoor seating, especially popular with resident gringos for happy hour and sunset. Nachos sencillos are a delicious bargain menu item. Supposedly karaoke on Tues and Thurs but we didn't grace/assault our ears with it.

***

El Shrimp Bucket

Olas Altas y Angel Flores

?

Very popular oceanview restaurant – flagship of a regional chain.  Good outdoor seating and delicious breakfasts.

****

Skybar at Best Western

Olas Altas y Sixto Osuna

15 pesos (HH)

Nice outside pool area on 11th floor.  Inside restaurant is a bit odd - go all the way up for sweeping views of the city and fresh air.  Food is rumored to be quite good.

?

A Bit Further Afield

Vitrolas

Herbierto Frias y Angel Flores

15 pesos (2x1)

Video bar with light snacks and excellent popcorn.  Great staff and clientele.  Another one of our favorites.

***

Pino Suarez Market

Benito Juarez y Leandro Valle

n/a

Food stand on the south middle side of market (Leandro Valle).  We think the chicken enchiladas here are a fabulous deal and to die for - a lighter style topped with lettuce, carrots and a thin delicious savory sauce.

n/a

Katana Sushi

Angel Flores y 5 de Mayo - Plaza Republica

Good selection of fresh fish but the elaborate style menu left me wanting simple sushi preparations.  However you can order plain nigiri which are generous cuts and very affordable.

?

Bar Olimpia

Mariano Escobedo y Benito Juarez

12 pesos

Very local bar – good beer deals and colorful clientele, not recommended for a bathroom stop.

*

Son Sin

Ninos Heroes y Mariano Escobedo

18 pesos

Another very local bar with a hammer-wielding bartendress – sometimes the beers are 10 pesos, but the lack of windows and profusion of smokers were a deal breaker for us.

*

Street Vendors

El Pumba

Angel Flores y Campana

n/a

By far our favorite in Mazatlan. Delectable carne asada tacos with freshly pressed tortillas and stuffed potatoes that will change your life.  Best food and prices in Mazatlan!  Approximately 7-10pm on southeast side of Plaza Leones in front of Visa Laser.

n/a

Churro Man

Benito Juarez y 21 de Marzo

n/a

5 churros for 10 pesos - hot out of the grease - muy rico!!  We have only seen him on Sunday evenings. There is another churro vendor east of the Plaza Republica from 4-8pm on weekdays only - go early to get fresh ones as she tends to stockpile later in the day.

n/a

Hot Dog Guy(s)

Carnaval y Angel Flores - Plaza Republica and/or near Sports Club

n/a

Hot dogs stuffed with cheese and/or wrapped in bacon.  Get them 'con todos' for tomatoes, onions, ketchup, mayo and mustard.  Add other sauces, and more cheese!, as needed.

n/a

Delicious!
