San Blas – Miramar – Santa Cruz

1/22/09 - 1/24/09

Although San Blas has a nasty reputation for biting insects, we thought it would be worth the stop for the extensive mangrove swamps with crocodile and bird-watching trips.  We opted to stay south of San Blas in Miramar, which afforded us some protection from the bugs.  We found the Hotel Paraiso Miramar to be in excellent condition with lush grassy areas, several refreshing pools, clean bathrooms, hot showers and a beautiful beach location.  The many types of accommodations here range from tent camping to grand suites in the former Nayarit governor’s house.  The owner, Emilio, is very friendly and knowledgeable about the area - plus speaks impeccable English!  There is even free Wi-Fi throughout the property.

From the southwest side of the river, across the bridge when entering San Blas, we caught a boat ride to La Tovara, a local nature preserve.  You can also catch this same boat company at the entrance to the park in Mantachen, but that cuts out about an hour’s ride through larger mangroves for the same price so we recommend hiring the boats from in town to get the extra time and views.  Our guide, Eduardo, spoke little English, but was extremely knowledgeable about the birds and plant species.  While we lost a bit in the translation, we learned a lot and were able to see and identify quite a few birds.

Since we decided not to eat at the halfway point restaurant on the boat tour (with the gated swimming area – sans crocodiles), we ventured into the town of Santa Cruz for some dinner.  We ate at Poncho’s Lonchoria y Antojitos, where we enjoyed the most delicious enchiladas suizas we have ever had.  Poncho’s is very economical – our whole meal with two kinds of enchiladas and a couple beers was only 75 pesos!  Even if the prices were higher, Poncho’s would be well worth a stop for the delightful ambiance and food.  Poncho’s is located on the main street in Santa Cruz on the left just before you reach the main square.
