Campeche

4/30/09 – 5/1/09

We visited the colonial city of Campeche, located on the Gulf of Mexico.  The historical sector of the city is surrounded by a high stone wall, designed to keep pirates at bay.  The city streets are filled with cute colonial buildings and architectural flourishes.

We stayed at the Hotel Plaza Campeche, which has air-conditioning, fantastic bathtubs, an outdoor pool and individual wi-fi in each room. It is conveniently located across from San Martin Park on the corner of Calle 10 and Calle 49C.  The hotel offers easy access to the historical center of Campeche as well as to the Gulf of Mexico.  The coastline is dominated by a seawall and malecon, while this city is on the water, there is no beachfront.  For a beach experience, you must travel north or south of Campeche.

Campeche is generally a great stop on a Mayan ruin tour. Unfortunately since the archeological sites are closed, we have been forced to change our itinerary. While we have not quite figured out what to do next, we hope to make the best of it and find other attractions in the area.
