Placencia Village

June 2009
Placencia is a small village that lies at the end of a 20 mile peninsula.  The road to get to Placencia is punishing, but there is a paving project underway so that will (hopefully!) soon change.  There is also a small airport that serves Placencia which is the better choice if flying into Belize.  Placencia has nice beaches and lagoon access which provide lots of opportunities for wildlife viewing and water sports.  Snorkeling, diving, boating and fishing trips are available at several tour operators around town.  Placencia is definitely a party atmosphere and people can be found eating, drinking and socializing around town at all hours of the day.

Our favorite establishment is the Pickled Parrot.  Fabulous owner Wende Bryan cooks up pizza, burgers, fish, and dinner specials from noon until 9pm daily.  Don't miss the daily "10 dolla" lunch special or the 5-6pm happy hour.  The Pickled Parrot also has two nice hardwood cabanas on the property, in one of which we took up residence for our month-long stay in Placencia.  We will miss Wende, Denise, David, Yvette and the rest of the Pickled Parrot staff.

The Pickled Parrot is conveniently located in the center of town near many great establishments on the Placencia road.  We love the Secret Garden for their fresh ingredients and eclectic changing menu.  La Dolce Vita has excellent authentic Italian cuisine in a casual atmosphere.  Rumfish y Vino has an amazing selection of Italian wines with Mexican and Continental bites to accompany.   For a delicious treat, try one of the many flavors of gelato at Tutti Frutti.

Further up the road, the Michelo Belgian Cafe is a must for breakfast and lunch specialties, including crepes, croques, eclairs and fresh salads.  Along the sidewalk, Barefoot Beach Bar is a fun place to relax with a drink or for dancing on Saturday nights.  Across the way, check out the local bar Sunrise for a casual atmosphere or singing your heart out on Karaoke Wednesdays.  Pizza Caye is located in between these two bars and has excellent thin crust pizza.

North of Placencia and the airstrip you will find Maya Beach, a small enclave of restaurants, hotels and shops.  The Maya Beach Hotel is a fantastic property and is home to the best restaurant on the peninsula.  Dinner at the resort is well worth the eight mile drive from Placencia Village.
