Belize to Guatemala Border Crossing

7/5/2009
Crossing the border between Benque Viejo del Carmen, Belize and Melchor de Mencos, Guatemala was a breeze. Belize fleeced us for a few more dollars in the name of departure taxes ($30 BZD/ person) and conservation funds ($7.50 BZD/person), but their paperwork was quick and painless. A few passport stamps, a vehicle-permit cancellation, the exchanging of currencies, one final offer to buy the van (from an immigration official) and we were in the fumigation tunnel to Guatemala.

The first step Guatemala is obtaining the vehicle fumigation certification (40 quetzales) to the right of the "tunnel", then across the road to the immigration line for a 90-day passport stamp. We were asked no questions here. Vehicle permitting is immediately left of the immigration line. Four photocopies are required to import a vehicle to Guatemala. These are: passport photo page, drivers license, vehicle title, and prior country vehicle cancellation stamp. Photocopies are available across the bridge, a five-minute walk, at the first store on the right, where we thrilled with variety of available products, even soda in a can! With the paperwork for the vehicle permit in hand, another 40 quetzales must be paid at the bank window along the right-hand side of the immigration building and then the vehicle sticker is granted and the process all but complete. A quick verification of our paper work by the bridge attendant/customs official and we were on our way – no questions, no vehicle inspection, just some helpful folks and friendly faces. Bienvenidos a Guatemala.
