Flores

7/6/2009 – 7/7/2009
Flores is an island in Lake Peten Itza, connected via a 500 meter causeway to the capital of El Peten, Santa Elena. This is a popular stop for travelers on their way to Tikal, as evidenced by the many backpackers wandering about town. We stayed at the Hospedaje Dona Goya, which provides clean, standard rooms on the north end of town and good prices. Our room was on the third floor with an excellent view of the lake. There is also a rooftop patio with hammocks and chairs, providing a prime viewing spot for the sunset.

The western lakeshore drive of Flores is home to many restaurants and hotels of varying price, targeted towards international tourists. Avoid La Villa del Chef which serves nachos in the form of stale chips with marinara sauce and caipirihnas as bottled lemonade. Further up the hill in the vicinity of the main plaza can be found more local restaurants with more reasonable prices and authentic food. The park in the town square also affords scenic vistas of the lake.

The View from Flores

After a good night’s sleep at the Dona Goya we headed south toward Rio Dulce. This route follows a well-paved road through rolling, verdant hills and small villages. The stellar road conditions allowed for a scenic three hour drive to Rio Dulce.
