Coban

7/9/09 - 7/10/09
From the Rio Dulce, we headed into the highlands of Guatemala.  Known for its wet and somewhat chilly weather, Coban is surrounded by lush mountains teeming with plant life.  We stayed at De La Abuela, which has several bungalows and rooms available on the hillside behind their restaurant just outside of Coban.  There is parking outside all the rooms and the food and service at the restaurant is delightful.  In the morning we visited Vivero Verapaz, a thirty year old orchid nursery.  We paid 10Q per person for a guided tour (in Spanish) from the owner.  The collection of orchids is impressive and the tour was well worth it.  Many of the orchids bloom in November and December, when the nursery holds the national orchid conference on the premises.
