Antigua

Antigua is lovely.  Simply lovely.  An exemplary colonial city which retains ancient charm, while adding modern conveniences.   An intriguing mix of national and international tourists as well as a vibrant resident population.  Delectable eats and accommodations on the cheap or a la luxe and all points in between.  Antigua's wonderful architecture is complemented by the verdant hills and volcanos surrounding the town.

We found excellent accommodations at the Hotel Aurora on 4a Calle Oriente.  They have a small secured parking area and clean, well-appointed rooms surrounding a nice courtyard.   The very hot showers and the mattress quality are both outstanding for the price.  Continental breakfast is included.

The sky is the limit in terms of restaurant choices.  We enjoyed everthing from street food to French cuisine to freshly baked banana bread.  Follow your nose to the panaderia on 4a Calle Oriente where the lines on Sunday go out the door.  After our long driving day, we splashed out at Bistrot Cinq and dined on steak tartare, frisee salad, haricot verts and frog legs.  Coupled with martinis, a bottle of wine and dessert, we felt this truly gourmet meal was a steal at only $58 including tax and tip!  Another great restaurant in town, especially for lunch, is Quesos y Vino, near La Merced.  This beautiful courtyard restaurant has a brick pizza oven and affordable wines in a delightful setting.  Cheap delicious snacks can be found at the street vendors in the parks outside most of the churches as well as in little sandwich and taco shops around town. There are also lots of opportunities for shopping in Antigua, evidenced by streets lined with shops and several artisan's markets.  A day wandering Antigua's streets sampling the cuisine and crafts or just soaking up the atmosphere is a must!
