Agriculture and Road Construction

7/16/09 – 7/18/09

The countryside between Antigua, Lake Atitlan and Quetzaltenango is dominated by agriculture and road construction.  Some ventures are more successful than others, but all are interesting and ambitious.

Flooding

Cutting the road into the mountain

I just like this bridge

Jess really likes the blue house on the right

Trash thrown over the bank

More road work

Future land slides and derrumbes

A study in contrasts

Farming the hillsides

Ladies working the fields

We enjoyed stays at the Hotel Modelo in Quetzaltenango (aka Xela) and Las Cumbres in Zunil, the latter which provides saunas and jacuzzis heated from underground hot springs and sweeping views of the valley.

A patchwork of hilly farmland (from Las Cumbres)
