Suchitoto

Suchitoto is a charming colonial town located in the central region of El Salvador, north of San Salvador in the Cuscatlan department.  The quaint cobblestone streets interspersed with grass are great for leisurely exploring the town's restaurants, shops, galleries and lake views.  The main plaza is home to cafes, a cathedral and a fabulous, stylish hotel with private patios overlooking the square.  Hotel Las Puertas also has a delicious restaurant and bar that is fantastic for people-watching and relaxing.

There are many activities available around Suchitoto, including boat rides on the lake, walking tours and exploring the famous Los Tercios waterfall.  Los Tercios is located on the road to Cinquera - it is signed - walk to right and climb down the rocks to see the waterfall - stay left on the path for excellent vistas of Lake Suchitoto.  Boat tours leave from the Puerto San Juan dock which is a short drive or 20 minute walk from town.

Restaurant choices are plentiful in Suchitoto.  For affordable Salvadoran and international cuisine in a homey, artsy environment, head to Harlequin.  I had the plato tipico for $5.50 which was a large platter of steak, avocado, beans, fried plantains, cheese and fresh salad.  Jess had a garlic and herb pasta dish what was delicious.  Another place with excellent ambiance and food is Xela's pizza.  Sit back and enjoy the view in a hammock while eating delectable pizza.

We stayed at the extraordinary Los Almendros de San Lorenzo just off the main square.  This 200 year old property was renovated by Pascal Lebailly with exquisite attention to detail.  The spacious suites are relaxing and the pool provides a welcome retreat from the afternoon heat.
