San Andres

8/1/09
San Andres is a Mayan ruin close to Joya de Ceren.  It is easy to see both of these sites in a day due to their small size and proximity to each other.  The preservation of San Andres is interesting as the adobe was covered in concrete to "protect" the site, which creates an odd modern industrial feel.  We have found it fascinating to view the different methods of restoration, preservation and administration of the Mayan sites throughout Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.  I am certain someone will (or already has) gotten a PhD comparing and contrasting the different methodology and management of these archeological sites throughout the years.
