Ruta de Las Flores

8/1/09 - 8/2/09
The 'Ruta de Las Flores' is a colorful scenic roadway in western El Salvador that passes through five quaint mountain towns, each with their own specialty.  Apaneca is a popular tourist spot along the route with coffee plantations, floral nurseries and larger resort-style hotels.  Nahuizalco has unique handmade wooden furniture available while Ataco and Salcoatitan are known for handicrafts and textiles.  The weekend food festival and market in Juayua attracts many visitors from the capital.

Scenic views of the mountains and surrounding countryside abound on the Ruta de Las Flores.  We stopped in for coffee at the Santa Leticia farm, which also has a nice hotel and restaurant property with swimming pools, a rock-climbing wall, archeological finds and lots of kids activities.  Since this hotel was fully booked, we settled in at the equally busy Hotel Alicante Montana, which also provides a swimming pool, spa, horseback rides and other amenities.  The next day we wandered through the Juayua food festival and sampled some of the excellent cuisine available.  For a peek at El Salvador's country and mountain life, the Ruta de Las Flores is a wonderful choice for either a day trip or a weekend visit.
