Playa El Tunco

8/9/09 - 8/10/09
We were thrilled to find a place to camp at Roots Camping in the surfer hang of Playa El Tunco.  These two-story palapa style buildings provide a great place to pitch a tent in the breeze near the beach yet relatively sand and bug free.  Camping is $4 per person and includes use of a communal kitchen and bathroom.  Thereare showers available although the water is quite brackish.

The Hotel y Restaurante Roca Sunzal next door has delicious seafood, rooms with balconies and a moderate size swimming pool.  Further toward the center of town, Restaurante La Bocana is a great place to people watch with cold beers and a lovely second story view of the beach.  For cheap delectable eats, the ladies selling pupusas on the main drag near the beach area hit with both locals and tourists.   At 50 cents apiece, these corn masses filled with beans, cheese and/or pork fat are a steal.  Top the pupusas with the provided shredded cabbage, carrot and beet salad, a little bit of hot sauce and you’ve got yourself a scrumptious meal.   Buen provecho!
