San Juan del Sur
9/19/09 – 9/22/09
Fast becoming an international destination, San Juan del Sur is the most visited beach town in Nicaragua. A large statue of Jesus presides over the town, which is situated in a tranquil cove filled with fishing boats and small yachts.

San Juan's guiding light (literally, at night)

Many restaurants and hotels fill San Juan del Sur’s streets, with new ones popping up all the time. If you are in need of a little gringo time, head to Big Wave Dave’s or the Iguana bar. For pizza, sports and the internet, go to Jerry’s near the market. For a more authentic Nica experience go to any of the comedors or sodas along the side streets, or Marie’s or El Timon on the waterfront. We stayed at the comfortable and friendly Hotel Royal Chateau, which was clean, but had VERY cold showers.

Surfers flock to San Juan del Sur, in order to take the shuttles to the beaches just north and south of town. Be aware however that these beaches have a nasty but unfortunately accurate reputation of being haunts for thieves. We were fortunate enough to enjoy the outlying beaches sans peril, when we met up with a writer from Between the Waves and visited his private property/reserve north of town. This expansive property illustrated the beauty and appeal of San Juan del Sur.
