San Jose
10/1/09, 10/2/09, 10/4/09
Although most guidebooks and many people advise tourists to skip San Jose, we found the capital city of Costa Rica most enjoyable. We took the bus to San Jose on two different occasions, and even drove through the city with ease and expedition. The historic buildings and parks are contrasted with modern architecture and conveniences and also with traditional stands and vendors. There are four main pedestrian-only streets downtown, which make navigating the numerous shops a pleasure. While I was tempted by four-inch pink polka dot heels, I settled for a practical pair of sneakers to replace the ones “confiscated” by the Honduran police.

We were lucky to see a fantastic dance production at the National Theater. The show marked the 30th anniversary of the national dance troupe and was backed by the national orchestra. The show itself was amazing, but coupled with the quality and opulence of the theater made it even more spectacular.

National Theater

A nice dining experience can be found at the historic Gran Hotel across from the theater. The extremely thin crust pizza and litchi martinis are a must, while the patio seats give a sheltered view of the street action. For nightlife, we loved La Avispa for dancing and socializing. We highly recommend a trip to San Jose to get the local flavor of Costa Rica, and especially a visit to their excellent National Theater.
